Searching the Internet

The Internet is an invaluable tool for learning and can be expected to become more so as it develops. However, making best use of it presents a whole new set of problems, some of which concern the quality of the information provided and some of which concern the technology itself.

Fortunately the Higher Education community has prepared some excellent tutorials to help you make effective use of the Internet.

There are three stages in finding academic information on the Internet, and we can help you with each step along the way:

Internet Search Tools
For an effective search, you first need to plan it. Once you have clearly defined what you are looking for, you need to be skilled in using search engines and directories. There are also subject specific tutorials to help you make the best use of the Internet for your studies.
Evaluating Web Sites
There is a large amount of high quality information published on the Internet but even more rubbish - you need to be able to sort the good from the bad.
Organising References
You need a way of recording and organising the results that you have found, so that when you come to cite them later you do not need to spend time trying to find where a particular citation came from.
